We must preserve tolerance and peace in debate over Israel-Gaza conflict

The 7th of November marked one month since an attack on Israel reignited bloody conflict in Gaza. This ongoing and devastating situation has continued to fuel intense emotions overseas and in New Zealand.

The cause is complex, and so is knowing the appropriate response.
We do not pretend to have the perfect answer.

But no matter which side we are on, if we strike at the basic democratic principles in our outrage, we will all be poorer.

One side can’t have the right to have their say without the other receiving the same. The opportunity to listen and provide counter-speech must exist, otherwise this wouldn’t be a democracy.

Would you sign this public letter, regardless of which side you come from on this issue, working with us to preserve open debate and civil discourse?

Together, we sign this letter whilst disagreeing on many things.

We disagree about a way forward in the Middle East, and we disagree about much to do with the Arab-Israeli conflict.

We all agree, however, on the basic principles of democracy and are united against violence.

We are appalled that a Member of Parliament required Police protection to leave a protest in Auckland Domain because he expressed an unpopular opinion. We condemn intimidation, violence, and intolerance.

We are saddened by the unprecedented levels of both antisemitic and Islamophobic actions occurring around New Zealand associated with events overseas. Our common desire is that New Zealand would be a peaceful and free nation, where all people can speak freely and share their story.

We encourage all New Zealanders to use their voices to call out intolerance and hate, and to speak up for peace.

I care about the children. They should not have to suffer because adults can’t work things out and resort to violence.

I strongly support Israel in this conflict and in this country I only see vocal support for the Palestinian cause ( because the MSM seem to be very good at pushing that) and it seems to me that anyone who sides with Israel unfortunately has to keep their mouth shut. It’s unfortunate because the mob mentality amongst younger people and particularly those on the activist left are often just rabid and will not debate or even have a rational discussion about this topic which is sad. Many of them don’t realise if they were in Gaza or the West bank they would be executed by the very people they are so vocal to support because the people there reject everything they are about and the irony is, the only country in the Middle East they could be who they are is Israel.

But I agree with the FSU in that though I don’t agree with them, supporters of the Palestinian cause are allowed their voice but when they start to threaten violence against those that have a different opinion or they call for the annihilation of the jews and jihad on the West for supporting Israel then that means they are definitely using hate speech. Where are the police?

    Nowhere to be seen.

But I agree, an end to hostilities and peace in the Middle East again would be welcome, but there needs to be peace here too to enable frank discussion and to have honest education and correction of the information for the actual facts. As many of our young people have been misinformed by activists, teachers and educators and just see Palestinians as oppressed and so are with them. Alternate views and the history of the region including ancient history and the Bible both Old and New Testaments and even the Quran as well as how and why modern Israel was founded are not known by many of the young people today.

The loss of life in this conflict is terrible, there are no real winners in this war in that respect, but it was not Israel who started this war and Hamas knew exactly the response it would generate from Israel and they (Israel) sure as hell will finish it.

Hamas has all of its military infrastructure hidden behind or under its people and public institutions so they are using their own civilians as human shields. Those against Israel don’t seem to realise the deaths of Palestinian people is directly Hamas’s fault, not the Israelis. Israel is the only country that’s not allowed to win a war against them that they didn’t start.

But my opinion above on this is shared by others but we should be able to voice it without fear of physical attack. And Phil Twyford though I disagree with him on many things is absolutely correct about the tragic loss of life on both sides It’s disgusting that he had to have a police presence to enable him to safely leave the Auckland domain. But those on the whole are HIS people and unfortunately many of them are the kind that see free speech as something to quash and that needs to be banned because like all fascists and totalitarian minded individuals, they want to crush anything that does not agree with their “hive mind” concensus. It’s ironic that this happened to him since he is from a political party that seriously wanted to restrict individuals right to free speech under the guise of what they determine to be hate speech on the people of this country but it should not have happened. It’s only through free speech that we can counter and change opinions to be better informed and we must all be able to voice our opinion safely without fear.

Peace talks that can lead to a possible resolution, by an independent country, other than the US. End the blood shed between Palestine and Israel before mass migration occurs and/or and escalation of the war into Iran and/or Syria that further disables the Middle East.
