Dear Commissioner, I write regarding the reports that the New Zealand Herald publishers, NZME, will not publish a public letter and advertisement lamenting a rise in racism in New Zealand on the basis that they believe they need extra security to run it. As a New Zealander who believes in free speech and the importance of media companies being able to be platforms for public debates without having to fear censorious thugs, I believe it is unacceptable.  New Zealand's media outlets should feel confident that if they publish lawful material the Police will have their backs and prevent damage, violence, and intimidation against the press. I am urging you and the Police do everything in your power to assure our media that they will be protected from thugs, and that you will continue to protect the media so they can do their jobs.
