FSU acknowledges inspiring leadership of outgoing CEO, Jonathan Ayling, welcomes interim CEO
On behalf of the Free Speech Union board, it’s bittersweet to announce changes to the Free Speech Union’s senior leadership, with Jonathan Ayling resigning from the role after more than four years of leadership. The fight for free speech is not going anywhere, though, and we’re pleased to have a talented and passionate interim-CEO stepping into the role, Jillaine Heather, who has served as the Deputy Chair of the Board, says Stephen Franks, Chairperson of the Free Speech Union.
“Jonathan has led with dynamism, courage, and integrity, growing a formidable organisation that has changed the debate about free speech in New Zealand. We acknowledge the considerable personal commitment he has had in this role and thank him for his valuable work.
“We set up as a small group of concerned but committed individuals, and Jonathan’s vital leadership has developed the organisation into a proficient defender of our most important civil right and freedom. We’ve seen many wins including proposed ‘hate speech’ laws defeated, an online censorship regime rejected, censored individuals vindicated, and a cultural shift towards valuing this essential freedom.
“Jillaine Heather comes with important professional experience and skills, and a personal commitment to this cause. We have no doubt Jillaine will maintain and grow the momentum of the Free Speech Union. Would-be-censors be warned – we're still coming for you.
“Jillaine has a diverse career, spanning several continents, in a variety of sectors including executive search recruitment, human resources, event management, and in the legal-commercial technology sector, and she has a deep passion for human rights and civic responsibility. Her Master of Laws covered comparative human rights, freedom of speech as a constitutional right, law and technology, and South Pacific critical issues.
“This is an exciting new season for the Free Speech Union. Many grassroots membership organisations experience initial periods of enthusiasm and growth, only to peter out once initial fights are won. With over four years of impact and success under our belt, and a smooth leadership transition underway, our momentum will only grow.
“We’re especially grateful for the Free Speech Union staff during this time, and as always for the donors and supporters who make this work possible. Free speech is the fundamental human right that makes all others possible. We continue to strive to make New Zealand a peaceful, prosperous nation that celebrates free, frank, and open debate.”
