Christchurch ratepayers can be trusted! Backlash as Philip Arps makes Christchurch mayoral bid
Democracy is a radical idea – and a damn good one; together, letting everyone have their say is the best chance we have at a stable, prosperous future. The Free Speech Union’s comment to those questioning Philip Arps’ eligibility to run for Mayor is simple: trust the ratepayers of Christchurch to decide, they’re up to the task, says Jillaine Heather, Chief Executive of the Free Speech Union.
“Raising concerns about the inclusion of Arps in the mayoral race based on his views challenges the wisdom of the public and undermines the democratic process. If you disagree with Arps’ views, and I personally do, then call them out, and vote accordingly! That is what democracy enables.
“Yes, the democratic process means Arps does have a right to stand, but at the end of the day, it also gives ratepayers the right to decide at the ballot box. Transparency leads to trust, and elites must not belittle citizens by assuming they cannot decide who is fit to stand as mayor.
“In 2022, Arps stood for election as a school Board of Trustee. Elite panic ensured that he was simply allowed to run, but ultimately, he placed last in the contest.
“Journalists are currently reporting on Arps’ criminal convictions and his publicly held views. This is free speech in action, and an example of why open justice is essential. Free speech is an essential truth-seeking tool.”
